Unlikely Empires

Unlikely Empires is a free real-time strategy game created by Eric Gonzalez Payne and played directly in a web browser. Parallel worlds have collided, bringing together civilizations that were never supposed to meet. Cats, raccoons, unicorns, wizards, space explorers, humans, corporate armies, insect swarms, living plants and glass-like machines now compete for the same cities.

Behind the playful premise is a game about building a country that can survive its own victories. Recruit armies, establish cities, develop industry and advance through six eras, from Napoleonic warfare to the Future. Every people has five battlefield roles, while hives and machines bring distinctive strengths and tradeoffs. Research, positioning, defensive bunkers and the composition of your forces all shape a battle.

Conquest is only part of the challenge. Cities have populations, governments and political pressures of their own. War creates grief, resentment and unrest. Neglected cities can declare independence, and an armed revolt can take their hometown soldiers with them. You can shape local government, care for your population, negotiate with rivals or commit to the permanently hostile Devourer path.

Play solo against computer opponents, try three campaign openings, defend a fortress in Hold the Gate, or create an online match with friends. Nine maps include fictional battlefields and recognizable geography. Map-specific limits support up to sixteen commanders, combining human players and AI. An illustrated encyclopedia explains peoples, units, buildings, research and the rules behind the action.

Unlikely Empires is a personal hobby project made to be played and shared for free. It combines colorful, often ridiculous armies with meaningful strategic choices and the satisfaction of building something that can hold together under pressure. No installation or account is required to start playing on the official website.
